Visualization of the human body is not equal in the present. For example, studies on educational materials in medical education have shown an unequal distribution in how women and men are represented and placed in damaged or strong images. In anatomical training apps with interactive 3D, we have found more examples where the man constitutes the normative basis for displaying the human body. In some cases, a female model is not available. In cases where a female 3D model exists, the appearance of the outer parts of the woman’s sex is not included, but instead the visualization goes directly into the muscles etc. This fact is problematic in the case of sexual education and treatment in the care, which fills an important role in promoting women’s right to their own body and to tackle misconceptions about the female body in general in society.
Our aim, therefore, is to tackle this societal challenge regarding unequaled visualization of the woman’s gender by developing both the quality and the access to better visually based educational material. The visual material in education needs to be developed in terms of usability, accessibility and from a diversity perspective in order not to exclude individuals. We see great potential and long-term opportunities to, from a gender perspective, develop and evaluate a model where the woman’s vagina is visualized to initially address the question “am I normal?”.
